Program Descriptions

Edible Soil - All ages

Participants learn about the layers of soil (weathered rock, subsoil and topsoil) by making a cup of edible soil. Edible soil ingredients include vanilla wafers, pudding, Oreo cookies, sprinkles all topped off with a scrumptious gummy worm.

Soil Crayons - Ages 6 and up

Learn about soil colors by making your own crayon out of soil. Participants will crush soil samples into powder and add it to a test tube full of melted paraffin wax. We will quickly cool the crayons using an ice bath and remove them from the tubes. Each participant will take home their own handmade crayon. **Please note: since this activity is very hands-on we encourage parents to help younger students make their crayon.

Worms - All ages

Participants will discover the world of worms, what they eat, how they survive and why they are vital to the health of our environment. Worm bin will be brought into the library and participants will be able to closely observe a worm and even hold one if they want.

Bob and Otto - Preschool

Reading the story Bob and Otto by Robert O. Bruel we learn about the wonderful friendship between a caterpillar and a worm and how each of them are beneficial to the each other. Children will get to make a beautiful tissue paper cocoon and butterfly to take home with them.

Splish/Splash - Grades Pre K – 2

Using a storyboard, students will be able to follow a drop of water through the water cycle and then make their own water cycle.

New Program Offering!!

One new program we would like to highlight is our NEW Water Resources Program. Thanks to a generous gift from Procter & Gamble, we have received several PUR water filtration packets. We have developed a lesson to reach students about drinking water availability throughout the world. As they are learning about drinking water resources, they purify a contaminated sample of water to drink. You may now call Gwen at 513-772-7645 to register for 2009-2010 programs.

We are currently working on new programs for the 2009/10 school year. Please check our website for newly added programs. If you have ideas on programs you would like the Soil and Water Conservation District to develop, please call Gwen at the District’s office, 513-772-7645.

Cincinnati Area Professionals in Green Infrastructure Network
(CAPGIN)

A new organization dedicated to the promotion of green stormwater landscaping practices has been formed to develop and facilitate communication, education and building standards. This professional organization meets the last Wednesday of each month at the "Treetops" meeting room at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. These meetings are open to all professionals in the landscape industry and related fields. For more information, contact Holly Utrata-Halcomb, District Administrator at 513-772-7645.
