Temporary Sediment Traps

Sediment traps are temporary settling ponds having a simple spillway outlet. They can be installed as temporary measures during the construction phase. Unforeseen circumstances happen during a project. An example could be changes in the plans regarding retention/detention basin design. Since the project has to keep going, it cannot be bogged down waiting for the design changes and approval process. Temporary sediment traps can be installed to offer protection from soil erosion while the design changes are being made.

Sediment traps work by creating a ponding effect. This provides detention to allow the larger soil particles to settle down. Another effect of the ponded water is to slow the velocity of the runoff flow.

It should be noted that although sediment traps are good temporary erosion control practices, it should not be substituted for sound design of detention/retention basins, the slow release device and better planning.
